Students
Literacy students are adult and out-of-school teens who seek confidential, individualized reading help where they can set the learning pace and their own goals. They often have high aspirations but lack self-confidence because of frustration due to their poor literacy skills. The students that seek help through LVI generally read below the fifth grade level. The goal of LVI is to motivate the student to develop habits of lifelong learning to move beyond attaining minimal literacy skills.
Tutors
Literacy tutors are men and women who enjoy reading, who are trained in tutoring methods and who can devote time on a weekly basis to tutoring a student. Volunteers also serve their literacy programs by training and supporting tutors, recruiting tutors and students, maintaining an office and carrying out funding development and publicity efforts. In fiscal year 2008, there were over 8,500 tutors who provided services to 22,000 plus students in adult literacy programs through out Illinois (Source: Illinois Secretary of State website).
