Adult Basic Education

ABE is the stepping stone to advancement. Whether it leads to a GED, Employment, Training, or advanced studies, ABE is an excellent way to learn and refresh your knowledge of basic skills. Our self-directed program allows you to learn and progress at your own pace. Once your learning level is found, you will be provided with access to software assignments and homework assignments designed specifically to your needs. ABE is offered at both the main and west side site. Click here for the days and times ABE is offered.

GED Preparation

After taking a TABE test, our educators will prepare homework and computer assignments to fill in the weak areas of study. Success at the GED relies mostly on good reading skills, so READ, READ, READ. Beyond the reading, the GED skills include some algebra and geometry, science, social studies and writing. The center has a large supply of GED test books with sample tests in all five areas. When students maintain a steady attendance record, tutors can be assigned. Attitude and hard work pay off, so cone ready to learn. GED Preparation is offered at both the main and west side site. Click here to see the days and times GED Preparation is offered.

Macomb County Students between the ages of 18 and 22, may qualify for a Michigan Works Program that will not only cover the cost of the GED testing, but pay $7 a day for transportation. Don't hesitate to get your GED. Make the time now.

English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language is teaching English to a person whose native or primary language is one other than English. Currently we have two ESL classes each meeting three times a week. Our students come from locations all over the globe including but not limited to Yemen, Bangladesh, Iraq, Bosnia, Croatia, Uzbekistan and Moldova. Students learn by practicing conversation  and reading in the classroom as well as studying English using the Rosetta Stone program.

Job Readiness

Job Readiness is a class designed for the Adult Basic Education, GED and higher level ESL students. Teachers review basic skills for job search, resume writing and the job interview process as well as safety on the job. Students also complete exercises on the computer covering the basics of Internet search, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Leaps and Bounds Youth Programs provide safe and caring environments for youth with a variety of activities ha encourage study, recreation and exploration of new ideas. They include:

All youth that attend the program are required to submit a copy of their report card. Report cards are used to match youth with an appropriate tutor, and to shape learning activities for school year and summer programming.

We require all youth to take a Pre and Post School Attitude Survey. This survey includes questions about conflict reconciliation and nutrition. The survey is used to determine the child’s attitude toward attending school, how they handle conflict, which foods are healthier to eat, and their overall attitude regarding school. There is a separate survey for youth between the ages 6yrs - 9yrs and 10yrs - 14yrs.

The program satisfaction survey is given for both the Youth Programs and for any additional activities that youth decide participate in (Hip Hop Dance, Art, etc.). This allows us to determine if youth truly enjoy the program that we offer, and if there are additional activities we should consider adding. The survey is separated into two separate age groups: Kindergarten to 3rd grade and 4th grade and up.

Parent/Child Interactive Groups

Leaps and Bounds Family Services gives parents and children time to interact with each other by hosting Parent/Child Interactive Play Groups. Parents bring their children into a fun inviting atmosphere, where parents can learn to build bonds with their children, learn about their child's growth and development, and where the child can feel free to run around and express themselves.  This is also a way for parents to engage with other parents. There will be music to groove to, arts & crafts for the Picasso's, and story time. These groups will be led by Ms. Ellie and Ms Reba.
