(CBL) is regarded as having great potential for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of education. There are many websites and software packages available for simulation, intelligent tutoring, mathematical modeling, reading and language arts, language acquisition, and the sciences. Rosetta Stone and Plato are but two of the nationally recognized programs used in our Learning Centers.
Adult tutoring is available for active program participants. After working with the adult educator, an individual study plan that included individual tutoring may be established.
ESL (English As A Second Language)
Educator facilitated English as a Second Language (aka: ELL, ESOL) classes are held two days per week, 2 hours per day. Independent study is encouraged with Rosetta Stone computer software (providing the opportunity for hearing and speaking with direction) as well as numerous English acquisition websites.
Since hearing English is key to learning it, the use of conversational English is expected.
Adult Basic Education
(ABE) is the stepping stone to advancement. Whether it leads to a GED, employment training, or advanced studies, ABE is an excellent way to learn, or refresh your knowledge, of the basic skills. Our self-directed program allows you to learn and progress at your own pace. Once we^ve found your learning level, you will be provided with access to PLATO software assignments and homework assignments designed specifically to your needs, and be encouraged to seek direction and assistance as needed. Group tutoring times are available.
Just a glance at our learning centers^ “Walls of Fame” will reveal the success our clients have enjoyed working toward their GED. After taking a one and a half hour TABE test, our educators will prepare homework and PLATO assignments to fill in the weak areas of study. Success at the GED relies mostly on good reading skills, so if a client wants to do themselves the biggest favor, READ, READ, READ. Beyond the reading, the GED skills include some algebra and geometry. Tutors can be assigned when students maintain a steady attendance record. The center has a large supply of GED test books with sample test in all five areas: Language Arts-Writing, Language Arts-Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics-Parts I & II. Come ready to learn and we^ll teach you. Attitude and hard work pay off. The program is open to anyone wanting to try.
Macomb County students between the ages of 18 and 22, may qualify for a Michigan Works Program that will not only cover the cost of the GED testing, but pay $7 a day transportation allowance while they prepare. Don^t wait to get the paper that will get you to college. Make time now.
