SYMPOSIUM OVERVIEW

This symposium is sponsored by the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research and the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research, the National Cancer Institute, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

This NIH-IASWR conference provides an historic opportunity to identify a social work intervention research agenda that merits greater prominence among NIH scientific priorities. Two facts underscore the importance of this conference: 1) NIH is the nation's premier health-related research-funding institution and as such, it enjoys strong bi-partisan political support; and 2) despite the fact that social workers are major health and mental health service providers throughout the nation's human service systems, the populations served by social workers in real world service systems and the types of social work services provided have rarely (although with notable exceptions) been studied through NIH funding.

The conference provides a forum to identify for NIH and for the social work profession, an intervention research agenda that merits future targeted research funding support. A written report of the conference proceedings will be used to spur strategic efforts by the NIH, the social work profession and policymakers to carry out the proposed agenda. The symposium will include invitational presentations by leading social work intervention researchers as well as peer-reviewed papers and posters on recent intervention research by social workers. Finally, the symposium is designed to facilitate strategic planning for next steps to promote intervention research by social workers.
