He is my inspiration and my hero. When I look at Red Feather in this photo, I think of the old Indian Chief in the television commercial, who is standing on the side of the highway with a tear running down his cheek...and I know he is wondering why man is destroying his beautiful land that he once called home. Our Great Creator gave us all this beautiful land we called home and provided all of the good things for us to eat and drink...now man in all of his greed continues to take it all away. How many huge houses can they build on the sands and beaches, why do they come and see our land and think it is beautiful and then take away all of the beauty with great towering buildings from ocean to bay. Many moons ago we were free, one with our lands, now we watch as man takes away our freedom and our kind...one by one ... *Red Feather is a very proud stallion, that lived in the wild on the beaches of Virginia/North Carolina until March 2004, when he was captured and placed on a farm in Virginia Beach. He would not stay in the North Carolina/Currituck Wild Horse Sanctuary and continued to roam through False Cape State Park, Back Bay Wildlife Refuge and the Sandbridge Community of Virginia and had to be removed from the wild. Red Feather and his four mares continue to live on the farm in Virginia Beach until a wild horse sanctuary can be created for him and his herd. ( He has four colts born this year and we will be looking for homes for these beautiful colts in the spring.)
	In Virgina Virginia has been involved in protecting the wild horses as well as North Carolina.	• The Sandbridge Community, City of Virginia Beach and volunteers have responded to injured wild horses since the late 1990's
		• An ordinance was passed by the City of Virginia Beach to mirror the ordinances in North Carolina for the protection of the wild horses in Virginia. When the horses came into Virginia people believed that they did not belong to anyone and horses were captured and taken away.
		• In the fall of 1996, a stallion was found in Sandbridge, who had been shot in the jaw. He was taken to Dominion Equine Vet and was treated and released in North Carolina on the beach. Another old black stallion was hit and killed around the same time in Sandbridge.
		• Red Feather had three foals hit and killed on roadways in the Sandbridge Community since 1998 and one of his mares that was in foal was hit and survived her injuries but her foal was born dead.
		• A 6 month old colt was hit by a vehicle in Sandbridge and was taken to a farm where he was treated by Dr John Sangenario for his injuries. That colt remains on the farm and is named after Dr. John as he was named "Little John".
	In North Carolina	• In 1989 the community came together after so many wild horses were hit and killed on highway 12 and formed the Corolla Wild Horse Fund since it was Corolla where the horses were getting killed. A fence was erected in 1995 from the ocean to the sound to keep the wild horses out of the community and a Wild Horse Sanctuary was created from the Dare County/Currituck County line north on the beach to the Virginia/North Carolina line.
		• In 2000 the Wild Horse Management Plan was created and signed by Currituck County, North Carolina Estuarian Research Reserve, the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge and Corolla Wild Horse Fund. This plan was the guideline to managing the wild horses and is the only reason the wild horses still remain free in the Currituck County Wild Horse Sanctuary today.
