An Interview with ILC Board President, Tammy Starling

For newcomers to the ILC, what are some important things you'd like people to know?
Answer: I'd want them to know that the ILC is an organization dedicated to teaching tools of leadership and living from the heart. And, the ILC presents opportunities for people to learn tools of dialogue that can be applied to important themes like social justice. In terms of the programs we offer, to mention just one, our Full Coaching program is an intensive experience that allows people to learn the theories and tools of life-leadership that can greatly impact every area of their lives.
Who are the ILC's programs best suited for?
Answer: People who have a longing to live a life that is authentic and real. . . people who are looking for "realness" in life. People who are looking for something beyond the fluff and the stereotypes and the superficial stuff. The ILC tends to attract people who are really looking to discover what is at the core of life. And this includes people from all walks of life: entrepeneurs, business men and women, executives from corporations, physicians, therapists, school teachers, blue collar folks, lawyers, students, and more.
When someone attends an ILC program or workshop, what can they expect?
Answer: You would be meeting in a large group of people (15-20 people). The experience would include times when ideas are presented through "lecturettes" with lots of time for group sharing and responses. There are also very creative moments that put the ideas being learned into dramatic and musical forms of expression. Also, one can expect a highly supportive environment that allows you to challenge yourself to think more deeply and envision new possibilities for your life.
Why is the ILC so interested in bringing its programs to more young adults?
Answer: The ILC offers young people a unique opportunity to freely express their concerns about themselves and the world. And to freely explore who they are and who they want to be. They can do this exploration in a very respectful environment that fully honors diversity. Whatever a young person's passion is, we are supportive in helping them move forward toward realizing this passion. And I don't think young people get this kind of support and guidance from lots of other places.
At a real personal level, how has your experience of learning the tools of life-leadership impacted your life?
Answer: There are lots of ways! Some of the most important things to me are the relationship tools. I have really changed the way I relate to others. I am able to respond -- particularly with my children -- in ways that are really helping bond a relationship with them. I would say that this experience over the years has given me a tremendous amount of support within a community of people who have a genuine sense of concern for me. Also, the tools of life-leadership flavor all of the work that I do outside of the ILC and I am seeing big results with my clients. And one other thing. . .I am learning how to be more responsible and accountable for my behavior. . .the tools are helping me soften some of my really rough edges.
What about the cost for your programs?
Answer: There is a cost for what we offer. And, as a non-profit, we are committed to offering our programs at affordable prices. For those who are financially challenged, we do offer scholarships.
If someone wants more information but does not like e-mail communication, what are some other options ?
Answer: They can call us anytime. . .Our staff is eager to speak with people. And, for those living in the immediate Charlotte or Chapel Hill area, we have staff members who would be happy to arrange a coffee shop meeting.
