Nagano Lantern Festival

The Nagano Lantern Festival is an event that commemorates the Nagano Winter Olympics and has been held every year since 2004.  This wintry nighttime festival was founded upon the premise of the passing on Olympic aspirations for peace to future generations. The lanterns at the centerpiece of the festival disseminate this hope to the world. The year marks the 6th year since the festival’s inception.

The lantern festival has two main components. The first is the illumination of Zenkoji Temple in the five Olympic colors. The second is the “Dream Lantern Exhibition,” which features the many lanterns lining the road up to Zenkoji Temple.

This year, Clearwater is participating by planning to display lantern cutout panels at the Lantern Festival on Omotesando Street as a part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the  Clearwater Nagano Sister Cities Partnership. Clearwater citizens were encouraged to submit their designs.  Here are some examples of  lanterns submitted:

in order:
Countryside High School Art Club "Language of Peace"
Countryside High School "Symbol of Peace"
Sarah Butz "Clearwater Peace"
Sarah Ngugen "Visions of Peace"
